GIOTTO STOPPINO

Giotto Stoppino (1926-2011)

 

Born in Vigevano in 1926, Stoppino studied at the Politecnico di Milano.

In 1953, he opened his agency, Studio Architect Associate with Vittorio Gregotti and Ludovico Meneghetti. They specialized in architecture and design and were involved in the « Neo Liberty » movement in reaction to post-war modernism, considered too rigid and dehumanizing.

He received the Gran Premio Internazionale at the XIII Triennale in Milan in 1964.

In 1968, Stoppino returned to an independent practice.

He worked for important design companies. For Arteluce, he created the 537 lamp, for Kartell, the 4905 stackable tables. With Tronconi, he developed the Isos table lamp.

In 1979, he received the Compasso d’Oro for the Sheraton credenza, created with Lodovico Acerbis for Acerbis International.

In 1991, he received a second Compasso d’Oro for the Alessia handle system for Olivari.
