Angelo Mangiarotti (1921-2012)

 

Angelo Mangiarotti is a major figure of architecture and design in the second half of 20th Century.

Born in Milan, he graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1948. After a brief experience in the United States, he started a collaboration with Bruno Morassutti with whom he designed his first important buildings. His projects included innovative residential and industrial buildings as well as transportation infrastructure for the Milan underground and railway.

During the 60s, he was involved in the car industry as a consultant for Alfa-Romeo.

Mangiarotti created many successful design pieces edited by Italian companies.

For Artemide, he created the famous glass table lamps, « Lesbo » and « Saffo ».

He collaborated with the avant-garde company, Danese Milano, producing ceramics and gave cristal models for Colle Cristalleria.

For Skipper, the « Eros »and « Inca » line illustrate his plastic research. In his projects, the material characteristics must shape the object to its ideal form.

While working as a designer and architect, Mangiarotti had also an international career as a professor, teaching in the United States, Switzerland, Australia and Italy.

He was awarded the Compasso d’Oro for his carrier in 1994.
